
Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens (PMG) is an immersive mixed media art environment that is completely covered with mosaics. The space is made up of two indoor galleries and a bi-level outdoor sculpture garden. As a nonprofit museum, PMG celebrates art in its many forms through community outreach, public programs, hands-on activities, exhibitions, and tours. We welcome everyone to explore the space and embrace the possibility of self-expression.
About the internship:
The intern is responsible for providing interpretation for various audiences through gallery talks and informal conversation with visitors. They also assist with public programming, hands-on activities, and outreach at PMG and in the community.
Responsibilities may include:
- Facilitate self-guided interpretation in the space, including presenting gallery talks and engaging in conversations with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
- Engage in dialogue with visitors about complex and challenging topics including, but not limited to, mental health, cultural appropriation, sexuality in art, and gentrification
- Assist with education programming including PECO Family Jams, special events, hands-on activities, and outreach programs
- Assist with prepping and maintaining art materials for various programs
- Communicate clearly and thoroughly to visitors, community partners, and staff verbally and in writing
- Prevent visitors from damaging the artwork by routinely walking through the site and enforcing PMG policies
- Other duties as needed
Qualifications:
- Passionate about learning and sharing knowledge
- Non-judgmental listener
- Flexible and able to adapt quickly
- Comfortable working with all ages and different audiences
- Strong public speaking skills
- Commitment to exemplifying the values of PMG
- Ability to lift objects up to 30 pounds and stand for long periods of time outdoors
- Basic computer skills
- A background check and child abuse clearances will be required of the successful candidate
- All work is in person, so must have own transportation/be comfortable taking public transportation to Center City Philadelphia
