Dr. Nazera Sadiq Wright
Dr. Nazera Sadiq Wright, our Featured Scholar, is Associate Professor of English and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky. She is the
author of Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century(University of Illinois Press, 2016), which won the 2018Children’s Literature Association’s Honor Book Award for Outstanding Book of Literary Criticism. Her Digital Humanities project, DIGITAL GI(RL)S: Mapping Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century documents the cultural activities of black girls living in Philadelphia in the nineteenth century. In 2019, she was elected to the American Antiquarian Society. Fellowships through the Ford Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Bibliographical Society of America, and the American Philosophical Society funded archival research for her second book, Early African American Women Writers and Their Libraries.
Mariama J. Lockington
Mariama J. Lockington is an adoptee, educator, and critically acclaimed author. Mariama’s middle-grade debut, For Black Girls Like Me,
earned five starred reviews and was a Today Show Best Kids’ Book of 2019. Her sophomore middle-grade book, In The Key of Us, is a Stonewall Honor Award book and was featured in the New York Times. Her debut young adult novel, Forever is Now will be out May 23, 2023. Mariama lives in Kentucky with her wife, her sausage dog, Henry and an abundance of plants.
Elaysel Germán
Elaysel Germán began her career as a reading, language arts elementary school teacher. After teaching in the classroom, she served as a literacy coach and was responsible for K-5 literacy curriculum and professional development in after-school programs. She’s collaborated with community educators, teaching artists, and young people on best practices in culturally sustaining pedagogy. She works to center black literacies and epistemology/ies to co-create learning spaces that cultivate and love black/latinx children.
