As Dr. Pires presents
“The Politics of Children in Brazil”
Through drawing on a comprehensive ethnographic research undertaken in three different settings between 2008-2020, this paper will focus on the contemporary politics of childhood in Brazil. This research focused on the Programa Bolsa Família, a cash transfer program set in place to alleviate poverty, increase school attendance and improve health of the population, especially children. This program and others implemented by left wing governments have been under attack since the 2016 coup which toppled Dilma’s presidency. The talk concentrates on the difficulties Brazilian children and their families are facing under a neo-fascist government linked to armed forces, with a liberal economic agenda, and in a chaotic pandemic moment.
