“Racialized Habitus”: Knowledge/Power and Immigrant Youth
Presented by: Dan Cui
This paper examines the school experiences of Chinese Canadian youth, a population often ignored by the academy under the model minority discourse. Drawing on Bourdieu’s theoretical insights, I raise and discuss the concept of teachers’ racialised habitus in their practices of knowledge construction, and how it consequently affects Chinese Canadian youth’s identity construction.
Are “engaged” students in high school actually “engaging” in community services? Exploring Nepalese Canadians Experience

All high school students in Ontario require to involve in community services for graduating from high school. It is unclear how the young visible minorities, especially Nepalese Canadians are engaging and experiencing the mandatory community services. Therefore, this paper explores the Nepalese Canadian youth’s perspective on community service, and how this mandatory community service experiences fostering their engagement in multicultural communities.
Who Are Young Perfectionists?: A Call for Qualitative Inquiry in Perfectionism Research

Perfectionism in young people is on the rise, and yet we know very little about the lived experiences of perfectionistic youth. The vast majority of research directed at increasing our understanding of perfectionism in young people has only utilized quantitative methodologies, with an alarming lack of qualitative inquiry.
Multidiscipinary Approaches to Understanding Youth and Competitive Dance
Presented by: Dawn Zinga, Danielle Molnar & Maureen Connolly
This talk will focus on a new SSHRC funded project that examines competitive dancers’ and their families’ lived experience of dance. Particular attention will be given to the multidisciplinary nature of the project and its motivational model of engagement and commitment to dance.
